The Significant Name of God (13)

Yeshu‘ah on the relevance of names

Recently I happened to see a number of Scripture passages related to each other, and a very clear picture emerged about how important Yeshu‘ah (Jesus) finds names. Have a look with me:

[Yeshu‘ah]: “I say to you, whoever shall confess Me before men, him will the Son of Man also confess before the angels of God, but whoever denies Me before men, he will be denied before the angels of God.”

Luke 12: 8-9

[Yeshu‘ah]: “He that overcomes will be clothed in white garments; and I will by no means erase his name out of the Book of Life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.”

Revelation 3: 5

Yeshu‘ah says here that He wants to confess our names for the Father and for the angels, but then asks that we also confess His Name to the people around us. Confessing someone’s name (Greek: exomologeo) here means speaking openly and joyfully about his or her name, and honoring that name and thus the person.

“That is why Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify His people by His own blood. Let us go out to Him outside the camp and bear His reproach. For we do not have a permanent city here, but we are looking for the future one. Through Him, let us then continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, the fruit of our lips, confessing His Name.”

Hebrews 13: 12-15

The well-known Bible commentator Matthew Henry says about this last verse, among other things, that we must make our offerings; not an atoning sacrifice – that is what Yeshu‘ah has already brought. But “[the] sacrifice of praise to God, which we should offer up to God continually. In this are included all adoration and prayer, as well as thanksgiving; this is the fruit of our lips; we must speak forth the praises of God from unfeigned lips; and this must be offered only to God, not to angels, nor saints, nor any creature, but to the name of God alone; and it must be by Christ, in a dependence upon His meritorious satisfaction and intercession.” [emphasis added]

So what Name should we confess before our contemporaries? In any case and at least also the glorious Name of God Himself, YaHUaH, or the shortened form YaH! 1

Hallelu YaH !

Notes

1 The names in the Bible have meaning. That is why I transliterate them carefully so that they remain recognizable. Especially the glorious Name of God I represent here as accurately as possible from the oldest Hebrew original, instead of replacing this grand personal Name of The Most High by a common word, such as ‘Lord’.
